Modern Quilt Guild, to join or not to join?

Posted by SacModQG Admin on April 3, 2014 at 2:15 AM Comments comments (0)

In 2013, the Modern Quilt Guild decided to formally seek nonprofit status. By doing so, they can create more opportunities to spread the modern quilting movement. Existing modern quilt guilds have until December 2014 to join as an affiliated guild. Membership affords a number of different benefits for these affiliated guilds.

  • Discounted rates and fees for MQG quilt shows, conferences, and events
  • Early registration for conferences and events
  • Discounts and special offers with MQG sponsors and affiliated companies
  • Discounted small business and personal insurance
  • Permission to use the Modern Quilt Guild name and logo
  • Access to MQG newsletter and online forum
  • Access to monthly webinar series
  • Opportunity to participate in swaps and challenges
  • Members cards and pins
  • 10% discount on MQG merchandise

If existing guilds decide not to join, they can continue on with their activities as normal but will have to change their name. The Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild has opened up discussion on whether to join the Modern Quilt Guild. We have 2 options.

  1. We can join as an affiliate guild.
  2. We can stay as is (with a name change).

Regardless of which route our group decides to take, some aspects of our guild may change.

If we join, what changes?

  • Benefits - All members of the guild will receive the member benefits listed above and any additional benefits specific to the Sacramento Modern Quilt Guild.
  • Dues - As an official modern quilt guild, we will be responsible for paying dues to the national guild. As a result, members of our guild will be asked to pay dues as well. Dues can range anywhere from $15-$35/person. National dues will be approximately $15-20. Local dues may be needed to help cover our local activities.
  • By-laws - We will have to create a set of by-laws for our guild. These will formalize a leadership structure (president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, etc), voting procedures, dues, meetings, and other items. These would be voted on by the members. The Modern Quilt Guild has provided resources for us to utilize and several members have started a review of materials.

Part of joining as an affiliate guild and establishing by-laws means that the guild will adopt a purpose and mission statement similar to the Modern Quilt Guild. Their mission currently states, “to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. As an affiliated guild, the SMQG will seek to sponsor activities that support this mission. This may mean more opportunities to explore what modern quilting means and a chance to participate in classes, workshops, challenges, or swaps.

If we decide not to join, what changes?

The biggest change that will occur is a name change. By not joining, we will no longer be allowed to use the phrase “Modern Quilt Guild” in our name. We can change it to some variation of the phrase such as “Mod Quilters Guild” or “Quilt Group” but we have to change our name. Several members are currently in favor of having an affiliated Modern Quilt Guild in Sacramento. Should the existing SMQG decide not to join at this time, it remains open for others to decide whether to start a new group as an affiliated guild with the National Modern Quilt Guild.

What else?

Any other changes are dependent on our group. We can become as active as we want with regards to activities, events, classes, or workshops. We realize that our guild is growing! As we grow, we’re bringing in more members with their own ideas of what they would like out of their quilt guild. Please take some time to think about what you want out of your guild and whether you would like SMQG become official members of the National Modern Quilt Guild.

Modern March Madness

Posted by Kathryn Tobias on March 20, 2013 at 11:15 PM Comments comments (0)

Hi all! Last year, I followed Fat Quarterly to see who won their March Modern Madness. Here's the link to this: http://www.fatquarterly.com/modern-madness-brackets-are-set.html. If you go there now, you can print the form. I don't think the materials are out yet. But every couple of days, they'll post the next selection and you can vote on which material you think should win. Have fun!
