Pantone Color of the Year Challenge

Posted by SacModQG Admin on January 23, 2016 at 12:35 AM

Hey all!

I know you have been waiting patiently to bring the 80's back  for more information about the proposed Pantone Color of the Year challenge. I will admit, I am a fan of this combo. Maybe it's because I was too young in the 80's to have been really been scared by the overabundance of this combo. Maybe I only fondly remember my mothers obsession with mauve and cornflower blue and all the geese in bonnets that went along with it. I wanted to propose this as a challenge to reaquaint us with this color palette. Maybe we can unearth some of those warm feelings we had for it 30 years ago? Maybe not. Only time will tell.

The Pantone Color (s) of the year is actually 2 colors this year, Serenity and Rose Quartz. Their idea is specifically about how these two colors can live in harmony. I found this very inspiring as I knew these colors would be controversial. You can read the full statement about the color choices at . It is both inspiring and controversial.

So here's the scoop:

Pantone's official color numbers are Serenity 15-3919 and Rose Quartz 13-1520

The Bella Solids by Moda colors that match the most are 3 Sisters Pink and French Blue

The Kona colors that most closely match are Primrose and Cornflower

The "challenge" set forth is the use these colors to create something. It's can be a quilt or bag or whatever you want. Let's just give it a chance. The Pantone website has some beautiful color palettes available for inspiration. I'm loving the mints, grays, and dusky blues mixed in with it.  And let's not forget the dreamy shade of lavender that is created in between the two colors! We will share these finished projects at our May meeting. I would be totally open for a "Pantone and Pie" date too. If a bunch of us are working/struggling with this, we should get together and talk about it over a slice. Any excuse for pie right?

Happy Quilting!
